Xbox CEO Says the Division Isn't for Sale

Asha Sharma wants everyone to stop asking. The new Xbox CEO says the gaming division is not for sale, period, despite a year that's given plenty of people a reason to wonder.

Here's what that year actually looks like. Thousands of jobs cut. Xbox Game Studios broken apart. Four studios divested. Projects canceled outright. Game Pass, the subscription millions of people already pay into, quietly reshaped along the way. That's not speculation, that's just the tally of 2026 so far, according to Polygon.

So when Sharma stands up and says the whole thing isn't headed for a sale, I believe her, because I have no reason not to. But "not for sale" and "business as usual" are two very different promises, and only one of them was actually made here. Nobody said the layoffs stop. Nobody said Game Pass stops moving around. Nobody said Xbox Game Studios gets put back together the way it was.

That's the trouble with a denial that only answers the one question nobody with a controller actually cares about. I don't own stock in Microsoft. I own games I bought through that division, and a subscription I'm still deciding whether to renew. Ownership was never the worry. What happens to the games is.

Microsoft gets to keep the badge on the building. Whether anything good still comes out of it is a separate account, and right now it's overdrawn. Xbox stays on probation until a launch actually pays it down.
