Bill Skarsgård Lands Lead Role in Kojima's PHYSINT
Hideo Kojima confirmed Bill Skarsgård as the lead of PHYSINT during Xbox's Tokyo Game Show broadcast, alongside a fresh look at OD and the messy backstory of how Xbox ended up publishing the game at all.
Hideo Kojima closed out Xbox's Tokyo Game Show 2026 broadcast the way he closes out most things: with one more thing nobody was quite ready for. Bill Skarsgård is the lead of PHYSINT. That's confirmed now, not teased, not hinted, confirmed, with a poster Kojima says he shot himself showing Skarsgård next to Charlee Fraser.
Kojima's quote on the casting reads like a guy genuinely excited about it, calling the costume fittings, scans, and camera tests he ran with Skarsgård and Fraser earlier this year the thing that gave him confidence in where the whole project is headed. Fair enough. Skarsgård's got range, from the sewer clown everybody remembers to the quieter, weirder stuff like Barbarian and Nosferatu, and Kojima building a cast around actual performance chops instead of just a recognizable face is at least a promising instinct. He'll share the screen with Fraser, Don Lee, and Minami Hamabe, with Kojima promising more names down the road. I'll take that as a promise to be checked later, same as every other promise out of that man's mouth this decade.
OD got its moment too. Kojima showed behind the scenes footage of Sophia Lillis and Hunter Schafer in a performance capture session, which tells you the horror project is moving, even if there's still no real sense of what it plays like.
Here's the part that actually matters if you don't care about mood boards: PHYSINT is an Xbox game now. That's new as of last week, when Xbox and Kojima Productions announced the publishing deal, expanding on the OD partnership they already had. Eurogamer has reported that Sony's earlier decision to step away from the project came down to concerns over budget, potential profitability, and exclusivity. That's a claim from an unnamed report, not something Sony or Kojima Productions have confirmed on the record, so treat it as backstory with an asterisk rather than settled fact.
What is settled is that Xbox picked up a big-swing cinematic project from the guy who made Death Stranding and put a real actor's name on the box before showing a second of gameplay. That's a marketing win today. Whether it's a real game a person can sit down and finish is a question for whenever PHYSINT actually ships, and Kojima's track record on timelines is its own kind of horror story. Call me when there's a release date attached.
