Naughty Dog Teases TLOU Day 2026 With Free PS5 Wallpaper
A new animated Welcome Hub background arrives ahead of The Last of Us Day, with Naughty Dog promising real reveals on September 28 and HBO adding John Goodman to the cast.
A free wallpaper is not an announcement, whatever the marketing calendar would like you to believe, and Naughty Dog seems to know it, because the studio has been careful to frame its new PS5 Welcome Hub background as an appetizer rather than the meal. The Last of Us Day technically falls on September 26, but the studio has asked fans to wait until Monday the 28th for anything resembling substance, which is either admirable restraint or a very polite way of saying there was nothing ready yet.
What there is, today, is an animated background for the Welcome Hub landing page, downloadable at no cost, pairing both ages of Ellie drawn from across the two mainline games. Naughty Dog confirmed the rollout in a post on X, and PS5 owners can find it by opening the Welcome Hub, selecting Change Background, and hunting through the Games tab for The Last of Us entry. It is a first for the franchise on that particular screen, which is a nice enough distinction until you remember it is not the dynamic theme fans have been requesting since roughly the Vita era, back when Sony still understood that a home screen could have personality rather than merely function.
The studio's own teaser for Monday promises a partnership announcement, an unspecified collaboration, some digital surprises, and a No Return charity stream on Twitch, none of which, by Naughty Dog's own framing, sounds like the words Part 3. Whether that disappoints you depends entirely on how literally you took Neil Druckmann's remarks back in March, which sparked a fair amount of theorizing about where Ellie's story goes next; Sony has confirmed nothing, and the studio's attention remains visibly fixed on Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
The more concrete news arrived sideways, in the announcement that HBO's Season 3 has expanded its cast. John Goodman joins as a new character named Joey, Laura Bailey returns, having played Abby in The Last of Us Part II and a nurse in the show's first season, this time as a Seraphite leader called Elizabeth, and Ian Alexander returns as well, in a role not yet named, after first appearing as Lev.
None of this settles the only question the fanbase actually cares about, which is whether a third game arrives at all, but a franchise this carefully tended rarely lets a day pass without reminding you it is still worth the wait, and that patience, unlike most promises this industry makes, has so far been rewarded.
