Steam Frame VR Preorders Open, and Xbox Still Has No Horse in the Race
Valve's Steam Frame reservation window is live with fresh details on specs, accessories, and pricing tiers, and one rival console still doesn't even show up on the scoreboard.
Scoreboard first: Valve just opened reservations for the Steam Frame, and whatever you think of the price tag, at least there's a headset to argue about. Xbox still has nothing in this fight, and hasn't for years, so that's a point that goes to whoever bothers to show up.
Credit where it's due: Microsoft never pretended VR was worth chasing, so there's no broken promise to dunk on here, just an empty shelf where a headset should be. Fine. Moving on.
According to the breakdown from Blunty, the reservation system only lets you register for one storage tier, either the 256GB or the 1TB kit, a choice the channel says is designed to split demand rather than let everyone camp both lists. The same breakdown, also covered by DayOne, urges patience with early reviews, pointing to the rocky Steam Machine launch as the cautionary tale.
On the hardware side, Blunty flags field-of-view testing done by Norm from Tested, plus USB-C 2.0 handling both audio and data passthrough. The accessory lineup is the real flex: an Arcturus Vision 5K color passthrough camera built for spatial video and Gaussian splatting capture, Zenni and VR Optician prescription lens inserts, and Project Babble mouth-tracking support bolted on for good measure. There's also a Half-Life: Alyx bundle promotion tied to launch, with standard Steam refund policy still applying if the fit isn't right.
The scoreboard read: PlayStation has a VR headset on shelves, Valve has one on preorder, and Xbox has a controller and a prayer. That's not a close call, and it wasn't supposed to be.
Steam Frame ships into a category Sony already knows how to lose money on politely. Valve is welcome to find out how that feels.
