PS Plus October 2026: The Good Games Hide Behind a Paywall

PlayStation's October Essential lineup leads with F1 25, Hunt: Showdown 1896, and an Earth Defense Force spinoff, while the tier's actual value sits one subscription rung higher.

F1 25 is, by a comfortable margin, the most recognizable name on PlayStation's October Essential roster, and one notices immediately that the recognizability is doing most of the heavy lifting. You were promised, somewhere in the marketing copy of the last decade, that a subscription service existed to surprise you with its generosity; what Sony has actually delivered this month, according to the rundown posted by PlayStationGrenade, is a competent racing sim, a cooperative monster-hunting curiosity, and a chibi strategy sequel nobody was agitating for.

Hunt: Showdown 1896 supplies the tier's one genuine point of interest, a bounty-hunting shooter with the sort of tense, methodical pacing that at least distinguishes it from the live-service churn clogging every other storefront. Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 rounds things out on both PS5 and PS4, a toy-soldier spin on a series whose charm has always depended rather heavily on one's tolerance for repetition.

What Essential actually hands you this month

  • F1 25 on PS5, the headline draw and the one title here with a built-in audience.
  • Hunt: Showdown 1896 on PS5, a grim little bounty hunt worth the download regardless of the tier it arrived on.
  • Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 on PS5 and PS4, for subscribers who have made peace with the series' particular rhythms.

The reminder tucked at the bottom

Buried after the new arrivals sits the month's other instruction: claim last month's Extra catalog titles before they vanish, among them Sniper Elite: Resistance, MLB The Show 26, and Chained Echoes. That these are the games worth chasing, and that they require the pricier tier to begin with, tells you rather plainly which rung of this subscription Sony considers the one actually carrying the catalog's weight. Essential gets the filler; Extra gets Chained Echoes, a genuinely well-regarded throwback RPG that deserved better than a footnote.

Also tucked into the subscription this month, per PlayStationGrenade's rundown, is a pile of cosmetic bundles layered across other publishers' live-service games: skins and banners for Fortnite, a Battlefield 6 pack, extras for Call of Duty, Skate, Genshin Impact, and Warframe, along with older additions for Red Dead Redemption 2, Dragon Quest XI, Dauntless, and Skyforge. None of it is a game. All of it is cosmetic sweetener meant to make the headline three look more generous than they are, a trick every subscription service has learned to lean on once the actual lineup thins out.

The verdict

One does not begrudge a subscriber a racing sim and a decent hunting game in the same month; one simply notices that the month's best offering requires an upgrade to access, and that the tier actually marketed as the free one is, once again, the one doing the least.
