PlayStation Fans Hijack Surveys to Save Physical Discs
Sony asked PS5 owners and developers about anything but discs, and fans answered with discs anyway. Here is how deep the disc revolt actually runs.
You may recall the particular quiet with which corporations absorb criticism they have already decided to ignore, and Sony has perfected it: a survey goes out asking about something else entirely, and the responses come back as a chorus on one subject Sony would clearly prefer to leave unasked.
That is roughly what happened, according to Push Square, when a recent PlayStation survey not built around physical media became a vessel for exactly that grievance anyway. As Degenerate Jay lays out on his channel, the timing is not subtle: Sony confirmed in a PlayStation Blog post that disc production for new PlayStation releases ends in January 2028, and the backlash that followed has not cooled so much as found new places to vent.
The survey nobody asked for
Push Square separately reports, in a second story worth reading on its own, that Sony has also been surveying developers on physical sales figures, a detail PlayStation LifeStyle says has fans reading tea leaves toward a PS6 that keeps a disc drive after all. That is a hope, not a confirmation, and no publisher or Sony statement listed here says PS6 hardware plans one way or the other; treat it as fans doing the only thing left to them, which is hoping loudly.
What is less speculative is that at least one publisher says the conversation is real. NIS America president Kenzo Saruhashi told Kotaku that his company has been discussing the disc question directly with Sony, and that he believes the feedback is landing somewhere. Whether landing and changing anything are the same activity is, naturally, the entire dispute.
No disc, no buy
The more theatrical version of this protest played out live, when Kotaku documented PlayStation's own State of Play chat filling with calls of "no disc, no buy" during a broadcast that had nothing to do with the format. This site covered the developer survey angle earlier this week in Sony Reportedly Surveys Devs Over Ending PS5 Discs, and the throughline has not moved an inch since: fans keep finding the microphone, and Sony keeps declining to use it for anything beyond acknowledgment.
One does not need three separate surveys and a chat flood to establish that a decision is unpopular; that part was settled the moment the 2028 date was announced. What these episodes establish instead is a company that has become remarkably comfortable hearing complaints without treating them as instructions, which is its right, and which fans are, apparently, entitled to find insulting in return.
A library built on discs does not vanish because the discs stop, but the goodwill spent proving that point twice a survey cycle does not come back either.
