Xbox Responds to Game Pass Shakeup Rumor, Doesn't Deny Much
A leaker says Game Pass is getting split into ad and ad-free tiers with day-one games stripped out in 2027. Microsoft's non-denial only confirms one narrow slice of it.
Microsoft put out a statement about a Game Pass rumor, and the statement is more interesting than the rumor.
Here's the claim, from ResetEra poster Slayven: starting sometime between February and April of 2027, Game Pass gets carved into pieces. An ad-supported tier at $13 a month. An ad-free tier at $20, which is $3 cheaper than Ultimate costs right now. A $15 tier for a chunk of the library plus online multiplayer. An $11 tier for just the multiplayer, no games at all. Cloud streaming gets yanked out entirely and sold back to you as a $6 add-on capped at 25 hours. Want to play with your family? That's another $6. And the headline item: new releases stop showing up day one.
Microsoft's answer, given to GameSpot and first reported by Paul Tassi at Forbes, reads: "We regularly test different Game Pass offerings and look at what works best for players in different markets. We don't have any changes to announce today or plans that have been finalized. There are no changes to previously announced games coming to Game Pass Ultimate on day one."
Read that again. It denies exactly one thing: that previously announced day-one games are getting pulled off day one. It says nothing about games nobody's announced yet, nothing about the ad tier, nothing about the multiplayer-only tier, nothing about cloud streaming getting metered and sold back to you in hour chunks. That's a company picking its battle very carefully.
The leaker has a mixed but real track record
Slayven called the Game Pass Ultimate price hike back in October before it happened, though the number was off ($25 guessed, $30 delivered). They also correctly called the tier renaming to Essential and Premium. They whiffed on PC Game Pass getting removed, which never happened. Fellow leaker NateTheHate wouldn't confirm this new report but did vouch that whoever's feeding Slayven clearly knows something. None of that makes the 2027 overhaul true. It just means it's not nothing.
Sharma already started the demolition
Xbox CEO Asha Sharma didn't wait for 2027 to start pulling threads. She's already cut Game Pass Ultimate's price once, already pulled new Call of Duty games off day-one access, and already said out loud that Game Pass was too expensive and would "evolve into a more flexible system." Windowing games away from launch, testing ad-supported cloud streaming, floating a Netflix bundle with co-CEO Greg Peters admitting the two companies have "kicked around ideas." Every piece of this rumor lines up with something Sharma has already said she wants to try.
Day-one access to first-party games at launch was the entire reason people signed up for this thing in the first place. Fable and this month's Gears of War: E-Day and Minecraft Dungeons II are apparently still safe. Good for them. That's not a plan, that's a countdown clock, and Microsoft just told us they're not going to say when it stops.
Prove me wrong by making an actual announcement instead of a carefully worded non-answer.
