PS Plus October 2026 Lineup Trades Prestige for Grind
Sony's October selection of F1 25, Hunt: Showdown 1896 and Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 is competent, dutiful, and not the month you remember.
Three games land on PlayStation Plus Essential from October 6th, and none of them is the sort of thing you queue a trailer for twice. Eurogamer confirmed the lineup alongside the official reveal from PlayStation Access, and the smaller channel SpawnPoiint got there a day early with its own rundown, which tells you mainly that nobody was sitting on this one for a surprise.
The selection itself is F1 25, Hunt: Showdown 1896, and Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2, available to every Plus tier the moment the clock turns over, with last month's trio dropping off the service on the 5th. You have, I assume, noticed by now that a monthly reveal this well telegraphed is not really a reveal at all; it is a scheduling notice dressed up as an event, and Sony has been doing this long enough to know the difference and not care.
What Arrives on the 6th
- F1 25 brings the current Formula One season to the service as a full-fat racer rather than a demo dangle, which at least respects the subscriber enough to give them the real product.
- Hunt: Showdown 1896 is Crytek's bounty-hunting extraction shooter, tense and unforgiving in the way that genre tends to be, and the most interesting inclusion of the three on craft alone.
- Earth Defense Force: World Brothers 2 is the voxel-cube spin on the long-running kaiju-stomping series, cheerful and disposable in roughly equal measure.
The Curation Question
None of this is embarrassing. It is simply ordinary, and ordinary is the one register PlayStation's first-party output has spent a decade training its audience not to expect from this console. The monthly Plus tier was never built to carry the studio's prestige single-player work, Sony has said as much before, but there is still a gap worth naming between a service that hands you a competent racing sim and a catalog that, elsewhere on the same platform, produces the games people actually finish and recommend. F1 25 and Hunt: Showdown 1896 will occupy a weekend respectably. Neither will occupy a conversation.
SpawnPoiint's rundown also flags a Spider-Man Brand New Day tie-in and a seasonal content pack arriving around the same window, though those sit on the Extra and Premium tiers rather than in the Essential drop, and are worth treating as a separate story until Sony says otherwise.
What To Watch
The real test, as always, is not this month's three games but whether the November slate breaks the pattern or simply repeats it with different genre labels attached. A subscription service justifies its price by surprising you occasionally, and three sources agreeing on the same tidy list a week before launch is the opposite of a surprise; it is a company that has stopped expecting anyone to be surprised and planned the marketing accordingly.
