GTA 6 Skips Disney World, and Rockstar Just Blinked

Rockstar confirms GTA 6 will not spoof Walt Disney World, SeaWorld, or Cape Canaveral, choosing restraint where satire was owed.

There is a particular flavor of disappointment reserved for watching a satirist decline the easiest target in the room, and Rockstar has just served it up in Florida-shaped form. According to GameSpot, the studio has confirmed that GTA 6 will not include its own spoof of Walt Disney World, nor of SeaWorld, nor of the Space Coast and its Cape Canaveral launch pads. Jack McPherson, asked by Game Informer whether Orlando's tourist gauntlet would be represented, said it would not, though he insisted the game would still deliver what he called the "full Florida experience" through the landscapes, towns, and landmarks that did survive the studio's editing process.

The reasoning, as McPherson laid it out, is a design calculus: evaluating diversity of terrain, plant species, and rock formations before narrative and design carve the list down to what serves the game. It is a sensible process. It is also, if you have spent any time in Rockstar's back catalog, a strange place for the studio to suddenly develop restraint, given that this is a company that has spent two decades building its reputation on the specific pleasure of holding a funhouse mirror up to America's most self-serious institutions.

Jay Klaitz, who voiced Lester in GTA 5, floated the idea of a legally distinct "Psycho Park" in an earlier interview, calling the prospect interesting if Rockstar chose to dig into that environment. Rockstar, evidently, chose not to dig. There remains a door left ajar: radio chatter is still fair game, and the material practically writes itself, from the ticket prices that climb every year to the gift-shop markups to the entire cultural phenomenon of adults who never left the parks emotionally. Whether Rockstar walks through that door or leaves it shut is not something anyone outside the studio can promise.

None of this should surprise anyone who has actually looked at a map. Vice City stands in for Miami, a four-hour drive from Orlando, and even a map as sprawling as Rockstar's largest to date was never going to stretch that far just to accommodate a theme park cameo. GTA 5 set its own precedent here, sitting in the Los Angeles area without ever building a Disneyland substitute, settling instead for the more oblique jab of Fred's Pictures, a film studio clearly modeled on the real thing. Pointed satire, in other words, does not require a literal theme park; it requires nerve, and Rockstar has generally had plenty of it.

GTA 6 launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and it will presumably still find plenty to mock in a state that offers no shortage of material. I simply expected the mockery to be a little more literal than a few lines of radio dialogue can manage, and I suspect the studio's restraint here will read, in hindsight, less like discipline and more like a joke it decided not to finish telling.
