Score this one for the wallet snatchers, because Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive just confirmed the worst-kept secret in preorder economics: a $400 Grand Theft Auto VI collector's box that does not come with Grand Theft Auto VI. Credit where it's due, Xbox is not the publisher charging four hundred dollars to skip its own biggest game this time, and I will take that small mercy while it lasts.
The Goodtime State, Vice City Collection, as GameSpot reports, ships November 19, the same day as the game itself, and leans hard into Leonida's in-fiction hit show Macca the Gator. Four hundred dollars gets you a six-inch Macca figure with a stash compartment, matte black Oakley Frogskins sunglasses, a New Era 9FORTY snapback, a magnetic mirror, a swizzle spoon, a razor blade keychain, a crossbody bag, a shot glass shaped like a manatee, an enamel pin set in a metal tin, stickers, and a double-sided poster of the map. It is a genuinely stacked pile of merchandise. It is also, notably, not a video game.
Rockstar and Take-Two are hardly inventing this trick. Marathon, Diablo 4, and Borderlands 4 all sold standalone bundles that skip the software, and the logic is obvious once you say it out loud: a collector's box that ships separately never risks a preorder cancellation the way a bundled deluxe edition would. That matters here more than usual, since GTA 6 has reportedly already pulled in over $400 million from preorders alone, according to third-party research cited alongside this story. Nobody at Take-Two wants a single one of those preorders getting cold feet over a swizzle spoon.
Will the price come down before launch? No.
Early reaction has been rough, which tracks, because paying four hundred dollars for accessories while the actual disc gets sold separately is a hard sell to say out loud. But the box is going to sell out anyway, and scalpers already smell it, the same way they pounced on the GTA 6 DualSense controllers the moment those went up for preorder. eBay listings for this collection exist before the thing has even shipped, which tells you everything about who this was really priced for. As Tyrone Magnus and Inside Games both noted in their own coverage, the frustration online is real, but so is the demand that keeps making this business model work.
Fans have already started 3D printing their own versions of the box contents rather than pay up, and honestly, good for them. Take-Two is betting the scalpers move faster than the printers. I would not bet against Take-Two on that one.
