Sony wants your money for God of War Laufey four and a half months before anyone can review it, and the bonus items are locked behind story progress anyway.

God of War Laufey Pre-Orders Open Five Months Early

Pre-orders for God of War Laufey open tomorrow, September 29, at 10 a.m. local time, according to PlayStation.Blog. The game itself does not arrive until February 16, 2027. That gap, nearly five months, is not an accident of scheduling. It is the entire point of a pre-order: lock in the revenue commitment before a single review, a single hands-on impression, or a single frame of independent footage exists to inform the decision.

The mechanics of the ask are familiar. Buy before launch and you get the Last Wish Armor Set, a cosmetic Phranque appearance, and an in-game resource pack. Pay more for the Digital Deluxe Edition and the pile grows: a Dark Alchemy armor set, blade, bow scales, and catalyst, plus a digital artbook and the soundtrack. PlayStation.Blog notes that most of these unlock only through story progression, which is worth sitting with. You are not getting early access to anything. You are buying a claim ticket that gets honored whenever the game's own pacing decides to honor it. The only guarantee is that Santa Monica Studio and Sony get your card number now.

Even the physical standard edition, on paper the version least entangled with digital storefronts, delivers its bonus through a download code that requires an internet connection and an account. There is no version of this purchase that does not route back through PlayStation's own infrastructure.

Buried in the marketing is a genuine mechanical pitch: Faye's Serpent Bow, a shape-shifting weapon with a full-aim precision mode for pinpoint strikes and a half-aim hip-fire mode for close-range crowd control, plus swappable Scales that reskin both its look and its playstyle. That is the kind of detail that used to be the whole trailer. Now it is packaged alongside armor sets and artbooks as one more line in a tiered edition chart, competing for attention with the cosmetics instead of leading the pitch.

None of this makes Laufey a bad game, and nothing here says it will be. It says that the industry has learned to sell commitment months ahead of proof, and that the buyer absorbing that risk is the one holding a pre-order confirmation and a five-month wait, not the studio that already booked the sale.
