Modern Warfare 4 Brings Back Call of Duty's Most Hated Map

Activision confirmed Shipment is returning for Modern Warfare 4, and if you know the map, that sentence alone tells you everything about how the next few months of lobbies are going to feel.

Fans spotted it buried in the newly released trailer for MW4's PC version, and the Call of Duty account made it official with a dedicated post rather than letting the trailer speak for itself. No surprise there. Shipment has been dragged into nearly every Modern Warfare game since it first showed up in 2007, plus Call of Duty: Vanguard and Call of Duty: Mobile. At this point it's less a map than a franchise tradition nobody's allowed to skip.

For anyone who's never played it: Shipment is a box of shipping containers barely bigger than a parking lot. There's nowhere to breathe, no time to think, and a real chance you get shot the second you spawn in. People either treat it as the purest version of Call of Duty multiplayer or refuse to queue for it at all. Activision knows exactly which side of that argument sells more skins, which is presumably why it keeps coming back regardless of who's complaining.

What Activision hasn't said

Here's the part that actually matters if you're planning your first week with the game: Activision confirmed Shipment is coming, not when. MW4 launches with 12 6v6 maps, and nobody's said whether Shipment is one of them or a post-launch drop timed to keep engagement charts happy a month or two in. Until there's a map list with Shipment's name on it, treat this as a promise with no delivery date attached.

The rest of the pitch

Shipment isn't traveling alone. Activision has also confirmed MW4 will fix how double XP tokens burn through your playtime, kill the update-requires-restart notice that's annoyed everyone since forever, and add a Warzone option to hide the more ridiculous operator skins running around the battle royale. There's also a new Counter-Strike style mode in the mix, which is either a genuine attempt at variety or an admission that six-versus-six chaos needed a slower, quieter cousin.

  • Shipment confirmed for MW4, launch timing unconfirmed
  • Double XP token overhaul and no more forced restarts
  • Warzone gets a toggle to mute flashy skins
  • New Counter-Strike inspired mode included

MW4 launches October 23 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and PC, the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo platform since 2013's Ghosts and the first to leave PS4 and Xbox One behind entirely. That's a real jump for the series. Whether Shipment shows up on day one or gets held back to pad a content calendar is the one detail that decides if any of this good news actually lands on launch day.
