Xbox's Mythic Achievements Finally Reward 100% Completion

Xbox Insiders can now unlock Mythic Achievements, a retroactive completion tier that finally gives 100 percenters something to show for it, going all the way back to Xbox 360 games.

By Cass Novak

Microsoft finally shipped the achievement tier completionists have been asking for since the Xbox 360 was new hardware, and the funny part is it didn't need a single new game to do it. Mythic Achievements are rolling out today to Xbox Insiders, retroactively, which means some of you already have one and just don't know it yet.

The mechanism is simple enough to survive contact with marketing: finish every original achievement in a game and you get Mythic status, permanently. DLC and post-launch update achievements don't count against you (the one 'optional content' carve-out that actually benefits the player instead of the shareholder), and Microsoft is tagging those extras clearly as add-ons so nobody mistakes a season pass grind for the real requirement. As Xbox Wire confirms, the retroactive award reaches back through your whole library, Xbox 360 titles included, so your profile gets audited the moment you open it.

What Actually Changed

A new Gaming tab lands on your profile, and it's doing real bookkeeping work, not just a coat of paint:

  • Achievement history and Gamerscore milestone tracking in one place
  • A progress bar per game showing exactly what stands between you and Mythic
  • An option to filter that list down to only the achievements that count toward it
  • Visibility into friends' Gaming tabs, so bragging rights now come with receipts

That progress bar is the part worth testing yourself: it surfaces in Guide and Achievement details too, according to Xbox Wire, so the nagging reminder of what you haven't finished follows you around the console rather than staying buried in a menu you forget exists.

The Comparison Nobody at Microsoft Will Say Out Loud

Windows Central and GameSpot both land on the obvious framing, and so does the video from Xbox's channel aka Scratch, titled a nod to PlayStation's own trophy system: this is Xbox's answer to the Platinum Trophy, arriving roughly two console generations after players first asked for it. Eurogamer notes the feature had been circulating as a rumor before today's rollout, which lines up with this site's own earlier report on the feature surfacing in app code well ahead of any keynote. The leak, in this case, held up exactly as described.

Gears of War: E-Day gets a mention in the same Xbox Wire post as a day-one Game Pass Ultimate title, which reads less like relevant context and more like a publisher squeezing a pre-order link into an achievements announcement (marketing never wastes a captive audience).

Mythic is Insider-only for now, with no public rollout date attached. Whenever it lands for everyone, the real test isn't the shiny new tab, it's whether the retroactive scan correctly credits every 360-era grind you already suffered through. Check your profile the day it hits your account. If your old completions don't show up right, that's the bug report worth filing.
