Arc Raiders' New Battle Pass Isn't Free, But It Pays You Back
Embark Studios is putting a price tag on Arc Raiders' battle pass for the first time, though the studio built in a refund that should make players feel better about paying it.
Arc Raiders has run three seasons on the honor system: play, grind, unlock. Starting October 8, that changes. The Frozen Trail update swaps the game's free Raider Decks for a new Reward Pass, and for the first time, part of it costs money.
According to GameSpot, everyone who owns Arc Raiders still gets a Free Pass at no extra charge. The Premium Pass runs 1,150 Raider Tokens, roughly $10, and Embark has drawn a clean line: gameplay-altering gear, new weapons, new equipment, stays exclusively on the free track. The paid tier is cosmetics only, which at least keeps the game's economy out of pay-to-win territory.
The Refund Is the Pitch
Here is the detail Embark wants you to notice: finish the Premium Pass and you earn back 1,350 Raider Tokens, 200 of which came from the Free Pass anyway. Spend $10, get more than $10 back in currency, at least on paper. It reads as generous, and compared to a live-service field that usually treats a battle pass as a one-way transaction, it is. It is also a mechanism built to guarantee you buy the next one too, since the tokens you just earned are sitting there waiting to be spent on it. Cosmetic-only rewards do not change the fact that a pass designed to refund itself is a pass designed to keep you subscribed to the habit of buying passes. Your time was never part of the exchange rate Embark is quoting.
What Else Frozen Trail Brings
The monetization shift arrives inside a genuinely large content drop. Per GameSpot and the Frozen Trail: First Look video from the ARC Raiders channel:
- Pendola Pass, a new frozen map billed as the toughest yet, ahead of Riven Tides
- Three new Arc threats: the Bully, the Skulker, and the Hydra
- The Frigate, an airborne raid-style event where several players fight through the Hydra, which can down multiple raiders and respawn after being killed
- Weapon amplification and stencil cosmetics for guns
- New gear including a grappling hook, a camera, a banjo, and a harmonica
- Optional objectives added to quests, plus an overhauled skill tree
- Outposts, customizable player-owned areas
A Frozen Trail Collector Set bundle will also be sold in the shop, bundling an outfit, a weapon stencil, a hairstyle, 2,400 Raider Tokens, and instant Premium Pass access.
Embark's Own Nerves
Embark's Aleksander Grondal told GameSpot the studio is sticking with roughly twice-yearly major updates rather than the old monthly cadence, though no date exists yet for whatever follows Frozen Trail. He also said an explorable Speranza hub is still just an idea under discussion, not a commitment. Asked how the team feels heading into a release this size, Grondal said it "almost feels like we're shipping the game again," adding that larger updates carry more risk to execute even as quality has improved since the monthly-patch era that some staff found uncomfortable to leave behind.
That discomfort is the tell worth sitting with. A battle pass that refunds itself is not built for players who might walk away. It is built for players Embark is betting will stay.
