Halo's Lore Reset: Activision May Wipe 25 Years of Canon

A new report claims Activision wants a soft reboot for Halo, ditching Infinite's story thread and much of the convoluted canon built since Bungie left. Nothing is confirmed, but the pitch alone tells us something about what we signed up for.

Halo fans built a mental shelf for twenty-five years of continuity, and Activision may be about to clear it in one motion. According to GameSpot, sources speaking to Rebs Gaming say Activision has floated a soft reboot for the next Halo game, one that skips a direct Halo Infinite sequel and resets at least part of the story without erasing everything that came before it.

The arithmetic here is almost funny: twenty-five years of required reading, novels and comics and spin-off games that were supposed to matter, apparently written off in less time than it took Activision to sketch a pitch deck. That is the real charge against Halo Studios, not this rumor. The Forerunner backstory in Halo 4, the Blue Team cameo in Halo 5, all of it homework assigned to people who just wanted to play a shooter, and now reportedly discarded before most of us finished the assignment.

We would like to grade the franchise on a curve here, call the mess a natural cost of twenty-five years of worldbuilding. We are not going to, because that curve is exactly how a quarter century of continuity got this tangled in the first place. Rebs Gaming also reports that Call of Duty developer Sledgehammer Games pitched prototypes built in the Infinity Ward engine before Activision reportedly scrapped those plans too, which tells us even the people pitching a clean slate could not agree on what clean meant. None of this is official. Former franchise director Frank O'Connor has reportedly offered his own warnings about where this could go wrong, and until Activision or Microsoft says a word on the record, we are filing this as a leak worth watching, not a plan worth trusting.
