HR Data Shows a Real PTO Spike for GTA 6's Launch Day

You have, I assume, already noticed the anecdotes: a coworker mentioning, with suspicious casualness, that he has a dentist appointment on the third Thursday of November, or a cousin who has apparently never taken a Thursday off in her life suddenly discovering the concept. What had been a running joke online now has a spreadsheet attached to it, and the spreadsheet, unhelpfully for the jokers, agrees with them.

BambooHR, an HR software provider serving more than 30,000 companies, examined paid-time-off requests from active employees across the United States and found that PTO bookings for November 19, the day GTA 6 launches, are running 9 to 17 percent above historical averages for recent years. In a memo sent to GameSpot, the company said this pattern held consistent, in its words, at every checkpoint it could measure. That is not a rumor traded between forum posters; that is a company that processes payroll and leave requests for a great many employers noticing that one specific Thursday looks nothing like the Thursdays around it.

BambooHR was careful, to its credit, not to overstate the case: it cannot say with certainty that GTA 6 is the cause, only that the data shows what it called a real, reproducible signal. One appreciates the restraint, though one also notes that the company floated, with what I choose to read as dry amusement, a few alternative explanations: the early-access launch of Witch the Showdown, which also arrives that day, or perhaps a sudden nationwide urge to commemorate the births of Jodie Foster and Adam Driver, or the 406th anniversary of the Mayflower reaching Cape Cod, or the 163rd anniversary of the Gettysburg Address. I leave it to you to decide how many of your colleagues are booking a personal day for the Gettysburg Address.

There is no comparable data yet for November 20, the Friday after, though anyone who has ever tried to claw their way back to a desk mid-playthrough can guess how that request form fills out. A full run through GTA 6 is estimated at roughly 80 hours, which means the Thursday off buys you a running start into the weekend and very little else; you will simply be tired on Monday for a different, more honest reason.

GTA 6 launches November 19 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, alongside GTA 6: The Album, a 34-track collection from a range of artists that, in a small act of format defiance, is arriving on physical disc while the game it accompanies exists nowhere but digitally and on your console's hard drive. It is, at minimum, the first time in a while that a piece of entertainment has moved actual, tabulated human behavior rather than merely trending on a platform for a day and vanishing. Whatever else November 19 turns out to be, it will not be a normal Thursday.
